Basil, parsley and flowering chives in terracotta pots on a kitchen windowsill

Why the Basil Dies and the Parsley Never Does

Basil, parsley and chives are usually sold together and grown together, though they want quite different light, water and pots. Basil is the one that fails first, and it almost always fails for the same reason. Match the herb to the windowsill you actually have rather than the one in the photograph.

How-to, step by step

01

Paint the Beams Out and Bring the Light Down

A vault puts most of its volume above head height, and dark beams turn that volume into a striped graphic. Painting them the ceiling colour makes the vault read as one calm shape. Then hang the light low, so the room regains a ceiling.

02

Your Black Front Door Needs a Black Frame

A black door in a white frame reads as a hole in the wall, which is why so many look cheaper than the paint cost. Painting the casing, the stops and the edges in the same black turns the whole opening into one deliberate shape. Then choose a satin exterior finish, because flat chalks and gloss shows every flaw.

03

Most Black Shutters Are Not Actually Black

The shutters people save are usually dark brown or bronze rather than true black, which is why copying them in jet black looks harsh. Off-blacks hold depth against cream and brick. Fit hinges and shutter dogs, or they read as panels screwed to the wall.

04

Put Something Woven at Every Window

Blue and white goes cold because both colours are cold, and no amount of brass ornament fixes it. Natural fibre at the windows warms the light itself before it reaches anything else. After that, mix as many blue patterns as you like, provided they share one blue and differ in scale.

Who we are

Every guide is built in a real room.

Nothing here is written from a catalogue. Our editors build the shelf, plant the bed and clean the kitchen, then publish the measurements, the failures and the tool list — so you can finish the job on a Saturday.
